West Coast Fever superstar Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard has reflected on what she considers one of the finest seasons of her illustrious career, as she earns a nomination for the prestigious Sports West WA 2025 WA Sports Star Award. The Jamaican goalshooter's nomination comes on the back of a remarkable performance that solidified her status as one of netball's all-time greats.
A Season of Unprecedented Achievement
Fowler-Nembhard's 2025 Super Netball campaign was nothing short of historic. She was crowned the Super Netball Player of the Year for an unprecedented sixth time, a testament to her enduring dominance in the league. Her scoring prowess was on full display, as she netted 841 goals with an astonishing 97 per cent accuracy, averaging 60 goals per game. This achievement marked her eighth season as the competition's leading goalscorer, a streak that many believe may never be broken.
Driving Fever to Success
Her individual brilliance was instrumental in propelling the West Coast Fever to a league record run of 13 consecutive victories, culminating in a grand final appearance. Although the Fever narrowly lost to arch-rivals Melbourne Vixens by a single goal at Rod Laver Arena, Fowler-Nembhard's leadership and skill were pivotal throughout the season. She also celebrated her seventh consecutive Stacey Marinkovich Medal as the club's champion, further cementing her legacy within the team.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
Making her season even more remarkable was the personal adversity Fowler-Nembhard overcame. The 36-year-old fought back from a pregnancy loss prior to the season, making an inspirational comeback in round three. Reflecting on this, she told The West Australian, "I would say it is one of my best seasons, one that I am really proud of given all that I went through last year. To still be able to perform by the grace of God of course. I look back and I am really grateful."
Focus on Team Contribution
When asked about her standout games, Fowler-Nembhard emphasised her team-oriented approach. "There was not a specific game which was my best but I would have to say getting out there each week and helping my team across the line was just good. Being able to have an impact and be there for my teammates when it was needed," she said. This humility underscores her value not just as a scorer, but as a key team player.
Looking Ahead to the Future
While Fowler-Nembhard will sit out the upcoming Super Netball season due to pregnancy, awaiting the birth of her second child, she remains optimistic about the Fever's prospects. "I'm very grateful to miss this season because of the reason I am missing it," she stated. "Looking on from the sidelines, I will just be there to support my teammates as much as I can. Just cheering them on and motivating them. It might not be business as usual but I'll be as active as I possibly can."
Confidence in the Team's Line-up
She expressed confidence in the Fever's ability to compete in her absence, as they chase a second premiership. "We do have a very good line-up. We have a good shot. Once we stay committed, once we stay together we will be fine," Fowler-Nembhard added. She highlighted that countrywoman Romelda Aiken-George, who came out of retirement to sign as a temporary replacement player, will step up. "While we can always learn from each other, she's going to be awesome. I will just be there to support her and encourage her," she said.
A Career Far from Over
Despite being out of contract at the end of the season, Fowler-Nembhard assured fans that her career is not over. "You haven't seen the last of me yet," she declared, promising a return to the court. The winner of the WA Sports Star Award will be announced at the annual WA Sport Awards on February 26, with Fowler-Nembhard among 12 finalists vying for the honour.
Her nomination serves as a fitting recognition of a season marked by resilience, skill, and an unwavering commitment to her team. As the netball community awaits her return, Fowler-Nembhard's legacy continues to inspire both fans and aspiring athletes across Australia and beyond.
