Newcastle's Netball Ambitions Soar with $6.7 Million Training Hub

The Wests Group has unveiled ambitious plans for a $6.7 million high-performance netball training facility at its Mayfield complex, a strategic move designed to bolster Newcastle's bid for a team in the national Super Netball league. The proposed hub, earmarked for the southwestern corner of the Industrial Drive site, is set to be built near the former Newcastle Knights headquarters and is specifically designed to meet Netball Australia's elite standards.

State-of-the-Art Facility Details

The elite training centre will feature a double-height indoor court, fully refurbished gym facilities, dedicated player amenities, and a small outdoor training area. It will be attached to the existing Balance gym, adjacent to the club's multi-level car park. According to development documents, the facility is intended for the exclusive use of an elite squad for daily training and is not designed for public competitions, spectator events, or general community use.

The construction will require the removal of 24 car parking spaces, but the development application assures that more than 550 spaces will remain available on the site.

Pushing for a National League Return

This significant investment comes as Netball Australia explores expansion options for the Super Netball competition, potentially adding two new franchises as early as 2027. Wests Group, which also owns the Newcastle Knights, is actively preparing a bid for one of these coveted spots.

Phil Gardner, Wests Group Chief Executive, confirmed the organisation's strong interest in October, stating, "We'd love to see a national netball licence come to Newcastle." He revealed that an expression of interest process is expected before Christmas, with a final decision on the new teams to follow.

The push has gained notable support from Netball Australia boss Stacey West, who recently described Wests' campaign as "exciting for the sport" and acknowledged the city's passionate sporting community.

A Legacy of Elite Netball in the Hunter

Newcastle has a history of national netball representation. The Hunter Jaegers competed in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy from 2004 to 2007, playing out of the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and regularly attracting sold-out crowds. The city's strong appetite for the sport was demonstrated again just three years ago when a international match between Australia and England at the entertainment centre also sold out.

The submitted Statement of Environmental Effects argues that the new Mayfield facility will demonstrate Wests' long-term commitment to the Hunter region's sporting landscape, support the growth of the netball community, and promote Newcastle as a key destination for visitors.

The City of Newcastle is now set to review the development application, with public submissions open from December 1 to 14.
