Bulldogs Claim Gritty Victory Over Raiders in Rain-Soaked Canberra
The Canterbury Bulldogs have ended their week on a high note, securing a hard-fought 14-10 victory over the Canberra Raiders in challenging wet conditions at GIO Stadium. This win marks the Bulldogs' second consecutive triumph to start the NRL season, an achievement not seen since 2012.
Stephen Crichton's Boot Proves Decisive
Despite off-field distractions surrounding centre Bronson Xerri's reported unhappiness after being dropped, the Bulldogs showed remarkable resilience. Stephen Crichton's two penalty goals ultimately made the difference in a tight contest, demonstrating his value in pressure situations.
With rain lashing down throughout the match, both teams struggled to maintain momentum in slippery conditions. The Raiders started strongly, but Canterbury's typically rigid defence held firm against repeated attacks.
Late Drama as Raiders Mount Comeback Attempt
The game came alive in the final ten minutes when Jacob Preston scored for the Bulldogs in the 71st minute, seemingly sealing the result. However, Raiders winger Savelio Tamale responded immediately with a try, setting up a thrilling finish.
Canterbury fullback Connor Tracey contributed significantly with 188 running metres and a try, while Crichton added 142 metres to his crucial goal-kicking contribution. Enari Tuala, replacing the dropped Xerri, made 20 tackles but was relatively quiet in attack with 77 running metres.
Raiders Disappoint in Milestone Match
The loss was particularly disappointing for Canberra as it marked coach Ricky Stuart's 300th match in charge. Tamale emerged as a standout performer for the Raiders, scoring two tries, running for 239 metres, and making seven tackle busts.
Second-rower Noah Martin also impressed with a game-high 40 tackles, but the Raiders couldn't overcome their recent form slump following a 40-6 loss to the Warriors last Friday.
Match Progression in Difficult Conditions
The Raiders drew first blood within four minutes when Tamale crossed after some clever passing. Canterbury responded quickly, with Tracey scoring after dragging Tamale out of play and moving swiftly downfield.
Canberra's Josh Papali'i was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle, but the Bulldogs could only manage two points during his absence. As rain intensified, both teams struggled with handling errors in a cagey contest.
Canberra thought they had equalized when Hudson Young crashed over, but he dropped the ball. In the final stages, Tracey broke through Canberra's middle before Preston wrestled over, with Tamale's late response proving insufficient.
The Bulldogs' victory demonstrates their growing confidence under pressure, while the Raiders face questions about their premiership credentials after two disappointing results to start the season.
