Canterbury's NRL season is hanging by a thread following a devastating 38-16 defeat to Cronulla in the opening match of Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Bulldogs Struggles Continue
Usually competitive for at least parts of the game, the out-of-sorts Bulldogs were never in the contest against a ruthless Sharks side that led 30-6 at halftime. The loss marks the seventh defeat in their last eight matches, leaving the premiership hopefuls potentially as low as 15th on the ladder by the end of the weekend.
The cut-off for a finals berth last season was a 13-11 record; the Bulldogs already have seven losses in 2026 with 14 games remaining. The returns of key players Matt Burton, Kurt Mann, and Max King from injury did little to spark the Bulldogs' attack or shore up their brittle goal-line defence.
Defensive Woes
The NRL's best defensive team in 2025, Canterbury defended only 14 red-zone tackles in the first half but conceded five tries. They have leaked 110 points across their last three outings. The Sharks' fourth try was one of the softest of the year, as back-up hooker Hohepa Puru flopped out of dummy half past both starting props, fullback Connor Tracey, and hooker Bailey Hayward.
Nicho Hynes' first-half try came after similarly thin defence, the halfback leaving four defenders in his wake at close range.
Bright Spots and Concerns
Stephen Crichton, under scrutiny for a New South Wales State of Origin spot, showed flashes of his best with a 65-metre burst down the right edge for the Bulldogs' second try. However, in his 150th NRL game, Crichton appeared below his best physically following a shoulder injury. He was caught way in-field ahead of Will Kennedy's try, as the Sharks fullback dummied straight through a hole in the Bulldogs' right edge.
Kennedy was busy all night as the Sharks responded well from Craig Fitzgibbon's scathing post-match critique last week. Right winger Ronaldo Mulitalo scored two tries on return from an anterior cruciate ligament injury last October, first grabbing a Braydon Trindall cut-out pass and later catching a cross-field kick from Hynes.
Origin Aspirants Shine
Trindall sent a last-ditch reminder of his talent to Queensland coach Billy Slater, scoring the first try after Kennedy outleapt Tracey and flicked out an offload. NSW Origin contender Addin Fonua-Blake had 170 metres and 32 tackles.
The Bulldogs face a daunting task to revive their season, with finals hopes fading rapidly.
