Selwyn Cobbo's Positive Outlook Ahead of Dolphins vs Broncos Showdown
Excitement, rather than any lingering bitterness, is the dominant emotion for Dolphins recruit Selwyn Cobbo as he gears up for his inaugural match against the Brisbane Broncos since his departure from the club. This highly anticipated encounter follows a period where Cobbo found himself out of favour during Brisbane's triumphant 2025 NRL season.
A New Chapter with the Dolphins
In a recent display of his attacking prowess, left winger Cobbo scored his first try for the Dolphins in Saturday's impressive 38-10 upset victory over Cronulla. This performance highlighted the significant offensive threat he brings to the Dolphins, bolstering their push for a maiden finals appearance in the competition.
Cobbo joined the Dolphins on a one-year deal last season while he was in the NRL wilderness, managing only three games from June onwards during Michael Maguire's debut season as head coach of the Broncos. At 23 years old, he watched from the sidelines as Josiah Karapani, Deine Mariner, Kotoni Staggs, and Gehamat Shibasaki emerged as the preferred outside backs, playing pivotal roles in Brisbane's journey to their seventh premiership, their first since 2006.
Focus on the Future, Not the Past
Despite the disappointment of being excluded from Brisbane's historic premiership victory, Cobbo maintains a positive and forward-looking attitude as Friday night's clash approaches. "I'm just excited, hey," Cobbo remarked. "They've done a lot for me and I just can't wait to go on the field and have a good game."
Reflecting on his roots, he added, "Growing up I always wanted to play for the Broncs, but you know, it is what it is, I guess. I'm just excited to play against my old club, my old teammates. We're mates off the field, but on the field it's time to go to work."
With only three games under his belt at his new club, Cobbo emphasized that it is too early to think about proving a point to the Broncos. "It's only the start of the year. There's more to come," he stated. "Just still trying to find my rhythm in this team and where I can fit in."
Teammate Praise and Team Dynamics
Dolphins teammate Herbie Farnworth, who played alongside Cobbo during his first-grade debut at Brisbane, expressed admiration for Cobbo's recent performance. Farnworth marveled as Cobbo sprinted 45 metres for a spectacular second-half try down the left edge against the Sharks.
"He's happy here at the Dolphins. I think it's shown on the footy field," Farnworth said of Cobbo. "Finally got him a little bit of good ball ... very impressive try at the end. That's what 'Selwy' can do. He's a freaky player."
The developing combination between Cobbo and Farnworth is expected to be crucial for the Dolphins as they aim to sustain their reputation as attacking powerhouses throughout the current NRL season.
