Ex-NRL Enforcer Unleashes Brutal Sledge Ahead of Boxing Showdown
A former NRL hardman has fired a savage verbal shot at his rival in the lead-up to their highly anticipated Easter Sunday boxing clash. Ex-NRL star Jarrod Wallace did not hold back when discussing opponent Nelson Asofa-Solomona, delivering a cutting remark about the Melbourne Storm's decision to part ways with the dual premiership winner.
Wallace Targets Asofa-Solomona's Storm Exit
Despite being labeled the underdog for his professional boxing debut against Asofa-Solomona, Wallace expressed unwavering confidence in his ability to overcome the larger opponent. He backed up his self-assurance with a pointed dig at Asofa-Solomona's departure from the Melbourne club at the conclusion of last season.
"He is big, he's powerful, I've got respect for him, but there are plenty of flaws," Wallace stated. "Craig Bellamy has seen it and that's why they sacked him."
When pressed for a reaction to Wallace's provocative comments, Asofa-Solomona simply smiled and offered a terse "no comment." The two former rugby league enforcers are scheduled to face off in Wollongong on the undercard of Tim Tszyu's WBO world title bout against undefeated Middleweight Denis Nurja.
History Between the Fighters
This is not the first time Wallace and Asofa-Solomona have exchanged blows. The pair previously met in an exhibition bout in late 2023, where Asofa-Solomona emerged victorious after Wallace's corner threw in the towel. The decisive moment came when Asofa-Solomona sent Wallace to the canvas with a powerful uppercut followed by a glancing right hand.
Since leaving the Melbourne Storm, Asofa-Solomona has committed to boxing full-time. He launched his professional career with an impressive knockout victory over former Dragons forward Jeremy Latimore.
Fighters' Confident Predictions
Asofa-Solomona predicted a dominant performance in the upcoming bout. "It's going to be a demolition job," he declared. "I really feel once he feels that 10 ounce glove he is going to get the shock of his life. I guarantee it's going to be a highlight reel finish."
Unfazed by his previous loss to Asofa-Solomona, Wallace vowed to push his opponent to the limit while positioning himself as the crowd favourite. "I think everyone would love to see me go in and knock him out," Wallace said. "I'm going to get him in deep waters, get him in deep rounds and throw. We're just going to throw bombs at each other. That's what everyone wants to see and that's what heavyweights do."
Additional Bouts on the Card
The event features several other notable matchups:
- Aussie super bantamweight Sam Goodman will battle Rodrigo Ruiz in an IBF World Title eliminator.
- Tokyo Olympian Paulo Aokuso aims for his tenth professional win against Kittipong Jian Hao Ho.
The stage is set for an explosive night of boxing, with personal rivalries and professional ambitions colliding in the ring.
