Payne Haas Denies Rift with Coach, Cites Family as Sole Reason for South Sydney Move

Brisbane Broncos prop Payne Haas has emphatically rejected claims that a rift with coach Michael Maguire is behind his stunning decision to sign with the South Sydney Rabbitohs ahead of the 2027 NRL season. The 26-year-old forward insists his move is driven entirely by family considerations, not any discord within the Broncos camp.

Shock Announcement Sparks Rumours

The NRL world was rocked on Sunday night when it was announced that Haas would join Wayne Bennett's Rabbitohs from 2027 on a three-year deal. Given Haas is at the absolute peak of his powers and has just won a drought-breaking premiership for the Broncos, the biggest club in the country, his bombshell defection immediately sparked widespread rumours of a falling out with coach Michael Maguire.

However, in a club-issued video statement recorded from England where the Broncos are preparing for next week's World Club Challenge, Haas poured cold water over that suggestion. He stated he has nothing but love and respect for Maguire.

Haas Sets the Record Straight

"I can’t believe the stuff with Madge," Haas said, referring to Maguire by his nickname. "I can’t believe all the speculation and all the rumours that have been tossed up. It’s far from the truth to be honest and that’s me being honest and truthful and transparent. There’s nothing wrong with us. We just won a premiership together and we won a State of Origin together. We’ve got a great relationship and I enjoy working hard under Madge."

Haas emphasised his work ethic and alignment with the coach's methods. "I’m a hard worker myself and that’s what I pride myself on. The way we work is what I love and I love doing that day in day out. For everyone saying that kind of stuff, it’s not true and it’s unfair to Madge and the Broncs as well."

Family the Deciding Factor

The young father explained that his decision to move south to Sydney was purely a family-based one. "My decision, it was pretty hard to be honest," he admitted. "Obviously, I love the Broncos and it’s all I’ve known since a kid, since I came in from school. The main factor for me was family. Nothing else to be honest."

Haas elaborated on his role as a family leader. "I felt that being a leader for my family is probably the best move for us to have a change and a fresh new start. I’ve got lots of support down there as well with my family and my agent. He’s down there, he’s like a second dad to myself and I need those kind of people around me, especially now for my siblings and my daughter and for my son as well."

He confirmed the decision was a collective one. "So, I feel like I’m being a leader. I had to lead and make that decision and it was not just myself but my partner as well. We thought as a family that would be the best for us."

No Chance of a Backflip

These comments come as Haas's management has insisted there is absolutely no chance he will backflip on the Rabbitohs deal, despite a cooling-off period that lasts into next week. Haas is yet to front the media in person since signing the three-year contract with Souths on Sunday, which will commence at the start of the 2027 season.

A Legacy at Brisbane

Payne Haas is widely regarded as the consensus best prop in the world. His accolades at the Broncos are unparalleled, having won a record six player of the year awards since his debut in 2018. His career statistics for the club are impressive:

  • 142 games played for the Broncos
  • 17 appearances for New South Wales in State of Origin
  • 4 Tests for Australia
  • 3 Tests for Samoa

His departure will undoubtedly leave a gaping hole in the Broncos' forward pack when he eventually departs. However, until that time comes, his focus remains squarely on achieving more success with Brisbane.

Focused on the Present and Another Premiership

"For the '26 season I’m ready to go all in for the boys, especially my brothers here, the coaching staff and especially the fans," Haas declared. "I want to give my all this year again and go back-to-back. That’s the main goal and I can’t wait to do that and enjoy the ride and just be present and take it day by day."

His commitment to the Broncos for the remainder of his contract underscores his professional attitude and desire to leave the club on a high note, further dispelling any notions of discontent.
