Knights Secure Future Talent with Strategic Recruitment Appointments
The Newcastle Knights have made a significant move to strengthen their long-term player development by appointing two former rugby league figures to key recruitment roles. The club has welcomed back Alex McKinnon in a newly created position, while also securing the services of Andrew Ryan to bolster their talent identification efforts.
McKinnon Returns to Knights in Pathways Role
Alex McKinnon, the former Knights player whose career was tragically cut short by a spinal injury in 2014, has returned to the club as a pathways recruitment analyst. The 33-year-old, who played 46 games for Newcastle before his career-ending tackle, brings both playing experience and academic qualifications to his new position.
McKinnon recently graduated from the University of Newcastle in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in psychological science, adding formal education to his several years of previous experience working in recruitment and pathways development. His appointment marks a return to the organization where he both played and previously worked before pursuing university studies.
Newcastle's football director Chris James expressed enthusiasm about McKinnon's return, stating: "I'm delighted to welcome Alex back home to the Knights. This is where he belongs, and his passion for identifying and developing our next generation of talent is exactly what this role needs."
James emphasized McKinnon's unique perspective, noting: "Alex brings a unique perspective - he understands what it takes to succeed at this club and the responsibility we have to nurture young players through every stage of their development."
Ryan Joins as Pathways Recruitment Scout
In addition to McKinnon's appointment, the Knights have secured former Bulldogs captain Andrew Ryan as a pathways recruitment scout. The former NSW and Australian representative, who has been based in Newcastle for over a decade, will focus on identifying junior talent across the Hunter region.
Ryan brings extensive playing experience to the role, having competed in 291 NRL games for Parramatta and Canterbury before retiring in 2011. He has maintained strong connections with the Newcastle rugby league community, currently coaching the South Newcastle Lions in the Newcastle Rugby League first-grade competition.
James highlighted Ryan's combination of elite playing background and local knowledge, explaining: "Having Andrew return to the Knights is fantastic for our pathways program. He brings elite-level playing experience combined with genuine local knowledge - he's been part of the Newcastle community for over 10 years and understands the Hunter rugby league landscape intimately."
The football director detailed Ryan's responsibilities, stating: "His role will see him actively involved in the Hunter Junior Rugby League, ensuring we're identifying and supporting talented young players early in their development, wherever they play across the Hunter region."
