The Dolphins are exploring their options ahead of a crucial away trip to Wellington to face the Warriors this Saturday, with five-eighth Kodi Nikorima suspended. Nikorima accepted a two-match ban for a hip-drop tackle on Penrith hooker Mitch Kenny during the Dolphins' narrow 23-22 loss in Darwin on Friday night. This suspension has opened the door for potential changes in the team's lineup, putting Max Plath in the spotlight for both a positional switch and a possible Queensland debut.
Training Trials and Team Dynamics
At Monday's training session, the Dolphins trialed several players at the No.6 position, including Jake Averillo, Kurt Donoghoe, and Max Plath. Plath, who delivered a superb performance at hooker against the Panthers, is also capable of playing lock, showcasing his remarkable versatility. When asked about his preference for the five-eighth role, forward Felise Kaufusi expressed strong support for Plath, citing his reliability and work ethic.
"I like Kurt Donoghoe at No.13 or off the bench, so I will go Plath," Kaufusi said. "He is so reliable and will get the job done if he is put there." This endorsement highlights Plath's growing reputation within the squad as a dependable and tough player.
Injury Concerns and Team Adjustments
The Dolphins are also managing injury concerns, with lock Morgan Knowles training separately due to a calf complaint, casting doubt on his availability. Meanwhile, Kurt Donoghoe is hopeful of returning from a hamstring injury, adding depth to the team's options. In another development, Trai Fuller, a fan favourite known for his explosive play, trained extensively at right centre during Monday's session and is likely to see game time against the Warriors.
Kaufusi emphasized Fuller's value, stating, "Trai Fuller is a fan favourite and wherever we can put him in it will benefit the team." Fuller, whose best position is fullback, has had limited NRL action this year, with only nine minutes off the bench in the round-one loss to South Sydney, making this opportunity significant for his season.
Origin Prospects and Team Morale
Maroons coach Billy Slater has previously nominated Plath as an Origin bolter, and Kaufusi, with 17 Origin appearances to his name, believes Plath is perfectly suited for the arena. "He is Mr Reliable," Kaufusi said. "He is a tough bugger and willing to do the hard work. Origin is all about the small moments... and he is there filling the space and never giving up. He fits that Origin arena."
Additionally, Dolphins second-rower Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who was in the Maroons' extended squad last year, is nearing an Origin debut. Kaufusi praised Finefeuiaki's contributions, noting, "He has been one of our best forwards this year with the way he carries, the way he kick-chases, and he is not afraid of hard work. That will put him in good stead if Billy is looking at him."
