NRL Legend Nathan Merritt's Brave Fight: 12-Month Prognosis Revealed

South Sydney Rabbitohs icon Nathan Merritt has courageously shared that he has been given approximately 12 months to live, following a devastating cancer diagnosis. The 42-year-old father of five was first diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in November, with liver cancer identified in February, marking a harrowing health battle for the beloved rugby league figure.

Chemotherapy and Emotional Struggles

Merritt is about to embark on his third round of chemotherapy, with a total of five rounds planned before reassessing his condition with medical professionals. He described the journey as a tiring battle but remains determined to extend his life expectancy. Despite his resolve, Merritt admits to experiencing little breakdowns when thinking about his children, expressing deep sorrow over the milestones he might miss.

It's hard sometimes, Merritt told News Corp. I'm just trying to stay as positive as I can and trying to be brave and strong for my kids. I don't want my kids seeing me vulnerable. At the end of the day, they need their dad to be strong for them to be strong.

A Special Moment at the Rabbitohs Game

Before his next chemotherapy session, Merritt will attend the Rabbitohs' Good Friday clash against Canterbury, where he has been granted the honour of ringing the club's Legacy Bell. He expressed immense gratitude for this opportunity, calling it a highlight of the remainder of my life and a special occasion for his family.

I'm happy Souths have given me the opportunity to ring the bell and be part of this game, Merritt said. It's a credit to the club and the people behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to put this together. I can't thank them enough for giving me this special treatment and making me feel part of the Rabbitohs family.

Merritt's Legacy and Community Impact

Nathan Merritt is a revered figure in South Sydney's modern history, having played 218 of his 237 first-grade games across two stints with the Redfern club. Upon his retirement in 2014, he was the Rabbitohs' all-time leading try-scorer with 146 four-pointers, a record only surpassed by Alex Johnston in recent years. In retirement, Merritt has remained actively involved with the Rabbitohs through Souths Cares and established his own charity, the Nathan Merritt Foundation, in 2014.

Rabbitohs star Jack Wighton praised Merritt, saying, He's one of the greats. The club loves him. I got to know him a little bit outside football and he's an absolute champion. It's going to be awesome to see him there, hopefully in good spirits ringing the bell.

Previous Health Challenges

This current battle follows a previous health scare in 2023, when Merritt made a full recovery after being placed on life support due to an adverse reaction to prescription medication. His resilience continues to inspire fans and the rugby league community alike.
