The National Rugby League community is engulfed in sorrow following the tragic death of South Sydney Rabbitohs pathways player, Johannes Logan. The 19-year-old's passing was confirmed this week, sending shockwaves through the sporting world.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Johannes Logan was a prodigious talent from Orange in central west New South Wales. Before joining the Rabbitohs, he was a schoolboy champion at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, where his athletic prowess was undeniable. He excelled in the first XV rugby team, captained the senior swimming team, played in the first water polo team, and even represented New South Wales in rugby.
In 2023, his football journey led him to the Rabbitohs' pathways program. Logan represented South Sydney in eight SG Ball Cup under 19s men’s games and one Jersey Flegg Cup under 21s men’s game last season. Described as a "much-loved member of the Rabbitohs", he was known for his willingness to support his teammates both on and off the field.
Club and Community in Mourning
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly personally delivered the devastating news to Logan's teammates on Tuesday morning. The club issued an official statement on Wednesday, expressing their profound grief. "The young middle forward had developed strong bonds and friendships within the playing group and staff, and he will be dearly missed by everyone connected to the Rabbitohs," the statement read.
The club has committed to supporting those closest to him, working with the RLPA, the NRL, and Logan’s school to provide care for his family, friends, and teammates. They have respectfully requested privacy for his loved ones during this immensely difficult time.
An Outpouring of Grief and Support
Back in his hometown, the Emus Rugby Club in Orange paid a heartfelt tribute to their junior star. "He was an incredible talent in both rugby codes and was a natural athlete," their statement said, also highlighting his dominance in the pool as a swimmer and water polo player. Most importantly, they remembered him as a "great kid who grew into a wonderful young man" and a dearly loved friend.
In a powerful show of community support, a GoFundMe page was established to aid the Logan family. The fundraiser had amassed an incredible $73,800 at the time of writing, a testament to the many lives he touched.
