Warriors to Negotiate with Broncos for Replacement After Barnett's Move

The New Zealand Warriors will initiate discussions with the Brisbane Broncos regarding a suitable replacement player for Mitchell Barnett, following the State of Origin prop's agreement to terms with the Broncos. This development comes after Barnett requested a release from the Warriors at the end of the current season on personal grounds, paving the way for his move to the reigning premiers.

Barnett's Contract Details and Family Considerations

Barnett is set to link with the Broncos on a two-year deal commencing in 2027, with a mutual option for a third year in 2029 if both parties wish to extend his stay. The decision was influenced by Barnett's desire to return to Australia for his son's medical treatment, with his family residing on the NSW mid-north coast in Taree. Prior to choosing Brisbane, Barnett had also engaged in talks with Parramatta and Manly, both of which were in contention for his signature before he prioritized the Broncos.

Warriors' Stance on Player Compensation

For Barnett to be officially released by the Warriors, the Auckland-based club is seeking a player in return to ensure they are not disadvantaged. Warriors CEO Cameron George emphasized the importance of securing playing talent from Brisbane, stating, "Everyone is aware of that. We are waiting to understand what that could look like." He added, "I am not going to name names. We are in talks with Brisbane and waiting to hear back from them."

Barnett's Career Trajectory and Market Value

Since leaving Newcastle at the end of 2022, Barnett has evolved into one of the premier front-rowers in the competition. His development coincides with a decrease in the volume of top-tier props, making him a highly valuable commodity on the market for 2027. Barnett's deal offers Brisbane a ready-made replacement for Payne Haas, following the star front-rower's unexpected defection to South Sydney for the upcoming season.

Balancing Welfare and Team Needs

George highlighted that the Warriors have consistently prioritized Barnett's welfare in agreeing to his release, but they also require adequate compensation from Brisbane. "The most important thing since Mitch and I had the conversation was that it is all about him and his family," George explained. "The decision from then on was for Mitch to make and not for us. Equally we are waiting to understand what the transaction looks like but I am extremely happy for Mitch and his family."
