Zac Lomax's NRL Future in Limbo as Lawyers Negotiate Parramatta Release

The NRL future of star winger Zac Lomax remains uncertain, with his legal team engaging in last-minute talks to secure his release from the Parramatta Eels. Just minutes before a scheduled NSW Supreme Court hearing on Monday morning, lawyers for both Lomax and the Eels requested additional time to continue negotiations that had been ongoing overnight.

Contract Dispute and Failed Moves

Lomax initially quit the Parramatta Eels in November in an attempt to join the R360 breakaway rugby union competition, but this move fell through when the competition's launch was postponed. Subsequently, his former club blocked his proposed transfer to NRL powerhouse Melbourne Storm for the 2026 season, which kicked off in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The Eels have argued that Lomax was aware he needed their permission before terminating his $700,000-a-year contract and moving to another NRL club. This dispute has led to a legal standoff, with a seven-day trial originally set to begin on Monday.

Court Proceedings and Settlement Efforts

During the court session, lawyers for both parties asked Justice Francois Kunc for an adjournment to pursue a settlement outside of court. Justice Kunc granted the request, remarking, "I always wish parties well in their attempts to resolve their differences." Parramatta's legal action aims to secure compensation for Lomax's intended move to Melbourne.

The Melbourne Storm have made three separate offers to the Eels to facilitate Lomax's release, with the most recent proposal valued at $300,000, including $211,000 in salary-cap relief. Lomax, represented by prominent barrister Adam Casselden SC, was not present in court on Monday morning, while Parramatta chief executive Jim Sarantinos attended, with esteemed barrister Arthur Moses SC representing the club.

Implications for Lomax's Career and Melbourne Storm

A settlement would allow Lomax to make an early-season return to rugby league, as the Melbourne Storm's season commences on Thursday night. However, closing submissions in the contract case are scheduled for March 17, after Round 2, with Justice Kunc likely needing additional time to deliberate. This timeline seriously threatens any hope of Lomax taking the field in purple before Round 4.

Melbourne's pursuit of Lomax has gained urgency following the injury to star winger Xavier Coates, who is ruled out until Round 10. While rising star Sua Fa'alogo could have filled this gap, he is needed in the number-one jersey after star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen departed in October.

The ongoing negotiations and legal proceedings highlight the complexities of player contracts in the NRL, with Lomax's career trajectory hanging in the balance as both sides seek a resolution.
