Warilla Bowls Club Proposes Major Revamp: Tennis Courts to Make Way for Accessible Green
Warilla Bowls Club Plans Revamp, Axing Tennis Courts

Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club in Barrack Heights is eyeing a significant transformation of its sports facilities, with plans now under consideration by Shellharbour City Council. The proposal involves removing half of the club's tennis courts to accommodate an enlarged accessible bowling green and create extra parking spaces.

Major Changes Proposed for Sports Site

The development application, currently on public exhibition until February 2, outlines substantial modifications to the club's existing layout. According to the statement of environmental effects submitted with the application, the western two tennis courts would be removed entirely to make way for these new facilities.

Accessible Green Expansion Takes Priority

The club plans to enlarge and cover an existing accessible bowling green located to the north of the main club building. This enhancement follows the club receiving a grant specifically aimed at improving facilities for disabled and socially disadvantaged groups.

The application documents state clearly: "The facilities will cater for disabled groups, socially disadvantaged groups and for the wider disabled bowling community." This represents a significant commitment to inclusive sporting opportunities in the Illawarra region.

Parking Improvements Planned

Alongside the bowling green expansion, the club proposes adding 41 new parking spaces on the area currently occupied by the two tennis courts slated for removal. The northern carpark closest to the holiday cabin accommodation will also undergo modifications as part of the comprehensive redevelopment.

The statement of environmental effects details the scope of work: "The proposed works involve the western two tennis courts, the northern carpark and the existing bowling green north of the outdoor gaming area and outdoor terrace. Three bowling greens are retained by the works, two tennis courts are removed, the carpark closest the cabin accommodation is modified with new parking provided over the area of the two tennis courts."

Community Impact and Timeline

Shellharbour City Council is currently reviewing the development application, with the public exhibition period providing community members an opportunity to examine and comment on the proposed changes. The council's decision will determine whether Warilla Bowls Club can proceed with this substantial reconfiguration of its sporting facilities.

If approved, the project would significantly alter the club's offerings, reducing tennis facilities while substantially enhancing bowling amenities, particularly for those with accessibility requirements. The additional parking would also address potential congestion issues during peak usage periods.

The proposal represents a strategic shift for the club, prioritizing inclusive bowling facilities over maintaining all existing tennis courts. This decision reflects both the grant funding received and the club's assessment of community needs and facility usage patterns.
