Sam Kerr's Champions League Dream Ends in Controversial Arsenal Defeat
Chelsea superstar Sam Kerr cut a dejected figure as potentially her final chance at Champions League glory was ended by Arsenal in the "Battle of the Matildas" on Thursday morning AEDT. Kerr helped set up Sjoeke Nusken's stoppage-time goal that gave Chelsea a 1-0 win on the night, but defending champions Arsenal advanced to the semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 3-1.
Contract Uncertainty and Future Prospects
The 32-year-old Kerr is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked to a move to the USA's National Women's Soccer League, which means she might not get another opportunity to win Europe's biggest prize. This loss caps a nightmare fortnight for Kerr after she also endured the heartbreak of losing the Asian Cup final, leaving her shattered on the sidelines after the final whistle brought an end to a hugely controversial tie.
VAR Controversy and Managerial Outrage
In the first leg, Chelsea had a crucial goal disallowed for an apparent foul that VAR ticked off despite replays showing it should have been given. In the second leg, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor was sent off for two bookable offences after she protested a hair pull by Arsenal's Katie McCabe that went unpunished. As time ticked down with Chelsea pushing for a second goal, Alyssa Thompson was charging forward with the ball when she was clearly pulled back by McCabe, who had a fist full of hair.
The referee waved it away and VAR failed to intervene, which saw Bompastor lose it on the sidelines. McCabe later apologised for her actions, saying she was trying to grab Thompson's shirt, while Bompastor was still fuming in her post-match interview. She even brought her phone and showed a replay of the incident to the cameras, stating, "If you look at this video, for me it's clearly a red card for the Arsenal player, she is pulling Alyssa's hair so for me if the VAR is not able to check that situation, I don't know why we have the VAR."
Arsenal's Victory and Key Performances
There was no such misery for Arsenal stars Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley, who took the spoils over their Matildas teammates Kerr and Ellie Carpenter. Catley had to watch from the bench after suffering an injury just before halftime, but she and Foord, both part of the Gunners' final triumph last season, both ended up smiling again at Stamford Bridge. After losing 3-1 the previous week, it had always looked a tall order for Chelsea, but Carpenter, with her lively forays down the right flank, and Kerr, after appearing too isolated early on, constantly looked a threat.
At the other end, Foord bamboozled Carpenter at one point, but her finish, as so often, didn't match the build-up work. Catley had been immaculate at the heart of Arsenal's defence, but just before the break she went down with what looked like a calf problem, and that was the end of her night. Kerr's best moment came in the 53rd minute when she made a terrific run to latch on to a long ball from Nusken and fired Chelsea's first shot on target, which needed to be tipped away at full stretch by the excellent Daphne van Domselaar.
Late Drama and Missed Opportunities
But even having lost Catley, Arsenal's defence was rarely troubled and it looked as if they had wrapped up the tie when Stina Blackstenius headed home in the 80th minute on the counter-attack, only to be ruled to have been fractionally offside in the build-up. The match finished with a flurry of chances, Chelsea hitting the post twice in the dying minutes through Veerle Buurman and Nusken, and Beth Mead striking the upright for Arsenal moments later.
Kerr, despite looking almost out on her feet, summoned up one last effort to make a run down the left and fire in a low cross to Nusken, whose first-time left-foot gave Chelsea one final lifeline in the 94th minute. There was still time for one final surge, but when the referee waved play on after Thompson's hair was pulled by McCabe, time ran out for Chelsea.
Other Champions League Action
Earlier, Manchester United were knocked out in their quarter-final as Bayern Munich claimed a 2-1 home victory to seal a 5-3 aggregate win. United trailed 3-2 from the first leg, but Melvine Malard struck early in Munich to level the tie, only for Glodis Viggosdottir and Linda Dallmann to latch on to corners and score in the last 10 minutes.
