Australia's First Female Astronaut Needs $100M for Space

Australian of the Year Katherine Bennell-Pegg has already overcome immense challenges to become the nation’s first female astronaut, but a significant obstacle remains on her path to space: funding.

Selected by the European Space Agency from over 22,000 applicants, Bennell-Pegg was invited to join the agency’s human spaceflight program through a proposed partnership with the Australian Government. This effectively secures a seat for an orbital mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

However, that ticket for a launch scheduled in 2028 comes at a cost of at least $100 million, which must be covered by the Albanese Government.

“It’s not just about a ticket to space; it’s about a program of research, science, education, diplomacy, and supply chain access. The astronaut is the key component that enables such a program,” Bennell-Pegg told The West Australian.

She highlighted the economic benefits, noting that the Australian Space Agency’s exploration program returns $7 for every $1 invested. “It’s an investment in the future,” she added.

A grassroots campaign, led by the International Space Centre at the University of Western Australia, is working to convince the government of the value of this mission. The campaign has garnered support from leading figures in the space industry and chief scientists, and has raised over $1 million in a co-contribution fund.

If this opportunity is missed, it could be decades before Australia gets another chance. “The ISS is nearing the end of its life in 2030 or thereabouts, and space agencies worldwide are filling their remaining seats. There are very few seats left,” Bennell-Pegg warned.

Katherine Bennell-Pegg will appear at The Nighty Live leadership breakfast at Crown Perth on Wednesday.
