A diver has captured rare underwater footage of a great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea, marking what is believed to be the first video of an adult of the species in its natural habitat in the region. The sighting occurred between Tunisia and Sicily during a mission organized by the NGO Healthy Seas Foundation, in partnership with Ghost Diving and The Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites, to remove abandoned fishing nets from the strait of Sicily.
Historic Underwater Sighting
Healthy Seas, an organization dedicated to removing rubbish from the world's oceans, announced that the footage is considered the first underwater video of an adult great white shark in the Mediterranean. The species has faced severe threats in the region, including overfishing, which has brought it close to extinction. The video highlights the presence of this apex predator in an area where it is rarely seen.
Conservation Efforts
The mission that led to the sighting was part of ongoing efforts to clear abandoned fishing nets, which pose a deadly threat to marine life. Healthy Seas emphasizes that such nets can entangle and kill sharks, dolphins, and other animals. The rare footage serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the Mediterranean's fragile ecosystem and the need to address overfishing and habitat destruction.
The great white shark, a protected species in many parts of the world, remains critically endangered in the Mediterranean. This sighting offers hope that conservation measures can help the species recover if threats are mitigated.
