President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ridiculed Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, accusing Vladimir Putin of repeatedly postponing his war goals as delays mount on the battlefield. In his nightly address on June 29, Zelenskyy said Russia's leadership is stuck in a cycle of broken deadlines and unachieved objectives.
Zelenskyy's Criticism of Russian Strategy
Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia's initial plan to capture Kyiv in days failed, and subsequent offensives in the east have stalled. He noted that Putin's deadlines for capturing key cities have been repeatedly pushed back. 'They said they would take Kyiv in three days, then in a week, then by May 9. Now they don't even name dates,' Zelenskyy said.
Military Impact and Western Support
Zelenskyy's comments come as Ukraine continues to receive advanced Western weaponry, including HIMARS rocket systems, which have been used to strike Russian supply lines and command posts. The Ukrainian military reports that the new systems have degraded Russian artillery capabilities. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russia has suffered over 35,000 casualties since the invasion began in February.
Putin's Shifting Goals
Russian officials have shifted their stated objectives multiple times, from demilitarization to securing the Donbas region. Zelenskyy argued this shows Russia lacks a coherent plan. 'They keep changing their goals because they cannot achieve any of them,' he said.
International Reaction
Western leaders have echoed Zelenskyy's skepticism. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that Russia's military performance has been 'deeply flawed,' and that Ukraine's resistance has exceeded expectations. The EU has pledged continued military and financial aid to Ukraine.
