An eight-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after his quick thinking and composure saved his grandfather from drowning when their kayak overturned during a holiday in Wales.
Calm Under Pressure
Marley and his grandfather, David 'Dai' Jones, were enjoying a day out on the water last month when their kayak suddenly capsized. Unable to climb back onboard, the pair found themselves drifting away from shore as strong currents pulled them further out.
Mr Jones managed to help Marley back onto the kayak but could not get back on himself. He clung to the side of the kayak as the water grew colder and the sky darkened.
"I was getting tired and cold, and there was a point where I wasn't sure I'd make it. But I was trying to stay positive and keep calm for Marley because I didn't want him to be frightened," Mr Jones said in an interview.
Heroic Phone Call
Realizing the danger, Marley remained calm and used a mobile phone stored in a waterproof pouch to call his grandmother. She immediately alerted emergency services, who launched a local lifeboat to find the pair.
By the time rescuers reached them—less than 30 minutes after the call—the kayak had drifted more than three kilometers from the shore. Despite being cold and tired, the pair were in good spirits, according to first responders.
Relief and Recognition
Marley said he was relieved when the lifeboat arrived. "When I called my grandma, I told her I was ok but grandad looked like he was drowning and that we needed help. I was really happy when the lifeboat arrived - I thought PHEW!"
Rescuer Andy praised the pair for their actions. "Marley and Dai did exactly the right things when they found themselves in difficulty. They were both wearing lifejackets, they had a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, they called for help when they realised they were unable to get safely back to shore, and they stayed with the kayak."
He added: "Spending 25 minutes in the water can quickly leave someone tired, cold and struggling to help themselves so David did well. I'd particularly like to praise Marley. He remained incredibly calm throughout the incident, contacted his Nan, shared his location and helped raise the alarm while keeping an eye on his grandad in what must have been a frightening situation. He showed real maturity and stayed level-headed throughout."
Special Medal for Bravery
A few days after the rescue, Marley and his grandfather were invited to visit the lifeboat station to meet the volunteer crew. During the visit, Marley was presented with a special medal to recognize his bravery.
