US President Donald Trump dramatically walked out of a televised interview after calling the reporter “crooked” during a heated exchange. The sit-down interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker quickly turned tense as the veteran journalist pressed Trump on multiple controversial issues, including his anti-weaponisation fund that could potentially compensate people involved in the January 6 riots. But it was questions about Trump’s widely debunked claims that the 2020 election was stolen that appeared to push him over the edge.
Heated Exchange Over Election Fraud
When Welker challenged him on his inability to provide evidence for his election fraud allegations, Trump became visibly frustrated and agitated. “You’re either crooked or you’re stupid. You play right into their hands with this crap. You know that these elections are rigged,” Trump said. The US President called a veteran journalist ‘crooked’ before abruptly ending the interview and storming off set.
“Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you darling. Have a good time,” he added before abruptly ending the taped interview. Shortly after walking out, Trump delivered a speech in which he labelled NBC “fake news”.
Aftermath and Reconciliation
Despite the dramatic exit, Welker has revealed she later spoke with the President and managed to smooth things over. Trump has reportedly agreed to a follow-up interview at a later date. The incident highlights the increasingly strained relationship between the Trump administration and mainstream media outlets.
