A man accused of stealing jewellery from a residence in Canberra was discovered by police asleep at the wheel of his still-running vehicle, leading to his arrest and multiple charges.
Incident Details
ACT Policing responded to a burglary report in the suburb of Macgregor on Tuesday morning. The homeowner reported that jewellery had been taken from their property. Officers quickly identified a suspect vehicle and located it nearby.
Upon approaching the car, police found the driver unconscious behind the wheel with the engine running. The man, aged 37, was allegedly in possession of the stolen jewellery. He was taken into custody without incident.
Charges and Court Appearance
The suspect has been charged with burglary and theft. He faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody to reappear next month. Police said the quick response and community assistance were crucial in solving the case.
According to Acting Station Sergeant Mark Richardson, "The alleged offender's actions were brazen and dangerous. Being found asleep in a running vehicle not only led to his arrest but also posed a risk to public safety."
The stolen jewellery, valued at approximately $10,000, has been recovered and returned to the owner.
