A 30-year-old man has been charged after allegedly causing serious head injuries to a nine-week-old baby on the Sunshine Coast. The infant was rushed to the intensive care unit at Sunshine Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries around 11pm on April 24, according to police. The baby boy suffered extensive brain and optical trauma, as well as multiple fractures.
Investigation and Arrest
Detectives from the Sunshine Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit, along with the Child Trauma Unit, launched an investigation to determine how the infant was injured. After more than six weeks of inquiries, focusing on the period from the boy's birth until his hospitalisation, a man known to the child was arrested.
The 30-year-old man from Currimundi was taken into custody at Warana on Saturday afternoon. Police confirmed the man was known to the child.
Charges and Court Appearance
He has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, classified as a domestic violence offence against a child. The man was refused police bail and is scheduled to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.
Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The baby remains in hospital receiving treatment for his injuries.
