Qld Detective Charged with Stalking, Misconduct

A senior Queensland police detective has been charged with 16 offences, accused of stalking multiple women, abusing his position, and fabricating a Crime Stoppers report. Detective Senior Constable John Paul Daniel McDonnell, 36, appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday to face the allegations, which have rocked the Queensland Police Service.

Details of the Charges

The charges against McDonnell include stalking, common assault, computer hacking, and misconduct in public office. Police allege he misused his authority while serving as an officer, including lodging a fake Crime Stoppers report. According to 7NEWS, investigators also claim McDonnell accessed intimate images stored on a woman's phone during a police search. Additionally, a witness has accused him of dangerously drawing his Glock firearm during an incident.

Impact on the Police Force

The allegations have sent shockwaves through the Queensland Police force. Officers have acknowledged that the case is likely to damage public confidence in the service. McDonnell, who has served as a police officer for about 15 years, is the son of a former assistant commissioner who worked within the Ethical Standards Command – the very division responsible for his arrest.
