A man and a woman have been taken into custody following the death of a 34-year-old man who succumbed to injuries sustained in an alleged assault on the New South Wales North Coast.
Emergency services rushed to a residence in Tweed Heads around 2:00 AM on Saturday after multiple calls to triple-0 reported a man who had allegedly been assaulted. According to police, the victim was seriously injured at a home in The Hermitage by an individual known to him before he managed to reach another location.
Paramedics provided treatment to the man after he was discovered lying on a driveway in Seaview Crescent. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly thereafter, law enforcement apprehended a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman at a home in Tweed Heads. Detective Senior Constable Gary Sheehan stated that all three individuals were acquainted with each other.
“It’s a serious matter and someone has lost their life, we will be looking at all lines of inquiry,” Sheehan told reporters on Saturday. He noted that the victim had sustained “very serious injuries.”
Sheehan confirmed that a large metal pole recovered from the scene had been collected by forensic teams. The 29-year-old woman has been charged with hindering a police investigation, while the 31-year-old man is continuing to assist authorities with their inquiries.
Blood and alcohol tests have been conducted as part of the investigation, Sheehan added. Tweed local Sapodia Lindley told 7NEWS that she was awakened by yelling and screaming coming from the street, which persisted for approximately 20 minutes. “It sounded like a fight,” she said. “It’s a little bit surreal, it’s usually a quiet street.”
Crime scenes have been established at both locations, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
