Winterfest Sydney 2026 has brought a medieval village to life in the heart of the city, complete with jousting knights, artisan markets, and period costumes. The annual festival, held at The Domain from July 6 to July 12, attracted over 50,000 visitors on its opening weekend, according to event organizers.
Jousting and Tournaments Take Center Stage
The highlight of the festival is the jousting tournament, where knights on horseback compete for the championship title. "It's a thrilling spectacle that transports audiences back to the Middle Ages," said event director Sarah Thompson. The tournament features eight knights from Australia and New Zealand, with daily matches drawing crowds of up to 10,000.
Artisan Markets and Medieval Crafts
Visitors can explore a sprawling artisan market with over 100 stalls offering handmade crafts, jewelry, and medieval-inspired clothing. Blacksmiths, weavers, and potters demonstrate traditional techniques, while food vendors serve roasted meats, mead, and hearty stews. "The market is a feast for the senses," said attendee Mark Davies. "You can smell the wood smoke and taste the spiced wine."
Family-Friendly Activities
The festival includes a dedicated children's area with puppet shows, archery lessons, and storytelling sessions. A medieval encampment allows families to see how knights and peasants lived, with replica tents and cooking fires. Organizers report that family ticket sales are up 20% from last year.
Evening Entertainment and Music
As night falls, the village comes alive with fire performers, minstrels, and a grand feast. The main stage hosts folk bands and medieval-inspired music, while a fireworks display on closing night is expected to draw 20,000 spectators. "Winterfest has become a beloved winter tradition for Sydneysiders," Thompson added. "It's a chance to escape the modern world and immerse yourself in history."
