A man has died after being attacked by a shark at a popular beach in northern New South Wales, marking the third fatal shark incident in the region in recent months. Emergency services were called to Byron Bay's Main Beach around 9:30 am on Monday after reports of a shark attack. The victim, a 35-year-old local surfer, suffered severe injuries to his leg and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shark Attack Details
According to Surf Life Saving NSW, the beach was closed immediately following the incident, and drones were deployed to monitor the area. The species of shark involved has not yet been confirmed, but authorities believe it may have been a great white. The attack comes just weeks after a teenage girl was killed while swimming near Ballina, about 30 kilometres south of Byron Bay.
Local mayor Simon Richardson expressed condolences and urged swimmers to be vigilant. "This is a tragedy for the family and the community," he said. "We are working with marine experts to understand what might be attracting sharks to these waters."
Fatal Stabbing in Sydney
In other news, police are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred in Sydney's inner west overnight. A 28-year-old man was found with multiple stab wounds outside a convenience store on Parramatta Road in Petersham around 11 pm Monday. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. A 32-year-old man has been taken into custody and is assisting police with inquiries. Detectives believe the two men were known to each other and that the incident may have stemmed from a dispute.
Prime Minister Announces New Climate Targets
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced new climate targets during a speech at the National Press Club in Canberra. The government has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% below 2005 levels by 2035, up from the previous target of 43%. The announcement comes ahead of the upcoming COP31 climate conference, which Australia is expected to co-host with Pacific nations.
"This is an ambitious but achievable target that will create jobs and protect our environment for future generations," Albanese said. The new target has been welcomed by environmental groups but criticised by the opposition as economically damaging.
