A shooting at a World Cup fan zone in San Jose, California, on Sunday evening has left one person dead and another with life-threatening injuries, according to local police.

The shooting occurred at San Pedro Square, a designated fan zone that had screened five World Cup games for public viewing. No match was underway at the time of the incident. San Jose Police issued a statement just after 10 p.m. local time, confirming that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second victim was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. Several surrounding streets were closed as officers secured the area. Bars and restaurants in the vicinity were shut down, and the fan zone was cordoned off with fencing.
Witness Accounts
According to Reuters, a reporter at the scene observed a body partially covered by a white sheet being carried away on a stretcher by uniformed officials. A security guard told Reuters, "The person was still moaning and groaning. There was blood around his neck and upper back." The guard added that police were speaking with security personnel and a couple of witnesses.
The fan zone is one of several in the greater San Francisco Bay area used for watch parties and gatherings during the World Cup. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no suspects have been identified as of now.
