Perth's lunar enthusiasts are preparing to witness June's Strawberry Moon on Tuesday evening, a celestial event that marks the full moon of the month. Despite its name, the moon will not appear red or pink like during a total lunar eclipse; instead, the term originates from North American Indigenous traditions that associated the June full moon with the strawberry harvest, according to Perth Observatory.
Best Viewing Times
The moon is expected to rise above the Perth Hills in the southeast on Tuesday at 5:28pm, with an additional opportunity on Wednesday at 6:26pm. Those hoping to catch the spectacle should plan to be at their chosen location a few minutes early to watch the moon ascend above the horizon.
Recommended Vantage Points
Perth offers several excellent spots for moon-gazing. Kings Park provides a elevated vantage point with unobstructed views to the east. Wireless Hill in Ardross is another popular location, offering a clear sightline over the city. For those in the western suburbs, Reabold Hill Lookout in Bold Park, City Beach, is an ideal choice. Alternatively, residents can simply step outside their homes and look towards the southeast, provided cloud cover is minimal.
According to the Perth Observatory, the Strawberry Moon is one of several full moons named by Native American tribes to track the seasons. The name does not imply any change in the moon's color but rather reflects the timing of the strawberry harvest in North America.
