Construction has officially begun on a major $800,000 upgrade to Chichester Park in Woodvale, bringing a new skate park, upgraded play spaces, and enhanced recreational facilities to the local community. The project, funded by the State Government under the PlayOn WA initiative, is expected to be completed by November.
Scope of the Upgrades
The upgrade will deliver a renewed basketball and netball pad, new picnic shelters, seating, and landscaping across the park along Tappers Drive. A beginner-level skate park and modernised play space are also part of the plans. Additional works include upgrades to footpaths and park furniture, a new drink fountain, mulched garden beds, and more tree planting.
Funding and Community Input
The project is fully funded by the State Government's PlayOn WA initiative, which aims to deliver 2030 new community sport and recreation infrastructure items across Western Australia by 2030. After the City of Joondalup budget was adopted, a sod-turning ceremony was held last week, marking the start of construction. Joondalup Mayor Daniel Kingston and Kingsley MLA Jessica Stojkovski attended the event. The city noted that the upgrades reflect priorities identified through community consultation in August 2023.
Official Statements
Mayor Daniel Kingston said the upgrades would create new opportunities for recreation and community connection. “These improvements to Chichester Park will create a vibrant, inclusive space where people of all ages can come together to play, be active and enjoy the outdoors,” he said. “The new skate park and playspace will provide modern, accessible facilities that respond directly to what our community told us they wanted, and we’re proud to be delivering this project as part of our broader commitment to enhancing local recreational infrastructure.”
Kingsley MLA Jessica Stojkovski highlighted the project's role in promoting healthy lifestyles. “I’m pleased to see this investment in Chichester Park, which will deliver high-quality facilities for local families, young people and the wider community to enjoy for years to come,” she said. “The PlayOn WA initiative is about creating more opportunities for people to get active and stay connected, and projects like this are a great example of that in action.”
Timeline and Impact
The project is expected to be completed by November, providing the Woodvale community with modern, accessible recreational infrastructure. The upgrades aim to encourage physical activity and social interaction among residents of all ages.
