The ACT government has issued a call for sportsground users to exercise caution as wild weather sweeps across Canberra. Storms and heavy rainfall have created hazardous conditions on playing fields, prompting officials to warn against use until further notice.
Weather Impact on Sportsgrounds
The severe weather, which began late Tuesday, has left many sportsgrounds waterlogged and unsafe for play. The government has advised that all scheduled games and training sessions be postponed until conditions improve. Inspections are underway to assess damage and ensure facilities are safe for public use.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Canberra experienced more than 50mm of rain in a 24-hour period, with strong winds up to 90km/h. These conditions have led to fallen branches and debris on several fields, increasing the risk of injury.
Government Response
ACT Sports Minister Yvette Berry stated, “We understand the frustration this may cause for clubs and participants, but safety is our top priority. We are working closely with ground managers to reopen facilities as soon as it is safe.” The government is also coordinating with local councils to address any infrastructure damage.
Residents are urged to avoid sportsgrounds and parks during the storm and to report any hazards to the relevant authorities. Further updates will be provided as the weather system moves east.
Long-Term Precautions
The government is also reviewing drainage systems and ground maintenance practices to better cope with extreme weather events. Climate projections indicate that such storms may become more frequent, necessitating proactive measures to protect public facilities.
Community Advisory
Sports clubs and community groups are advised to monitor weather forecasts and heed official warnings. The government has set up a hotline for queries regarding ground closures and can be reached at 13 22 81.
The wild weather is expected to ease by Thursday, but residual waterlogging may persist. Authorities recommend avoiding all sportsgrounds until they are officially declared safe.
