Canning Pioneers Tea Celebrates Long-Standing Residents and Families
Canning Pioneers Tea Honours Long-Standing Residents

The City of Canning has honoured its historical families and long-standing residents with the annual Pioneers Tea event, held last month at the Canning Exhibition Hall. The sold-out gathering welcomed 250 locals who have called the city home for more than 50 years.

Proud Canning Locals

Sandra and Stuart Ledwith, who have lived in Canning since 1968, were among the attendees. “We love being a part of the Canning community,” Ms Ledwith said. “There are so many community programs and groups to join here in Canning. With everything being so close by, it’s just another reason why we’ve stayed in the city. Even when we’ve moved house, we have only gone just a suburb or two away while still staying in Canning.”

The couple are active members of the Canning City Lions Club, where they work to improve their local community through fundraising and hands-on support. “As active members of the Lions Club here in Canning, we’ve been able to give back and raise money for so many different initiatives,” Mr Ledwith said.

Celebrating History

The event featured archival photos from the city’s local history collection, showcasing old shops, playgrounds, and the iconic Castledare Miniature Railway. Pioneers shared stories about their lives growing up in Canning and how the district has evolved over time.

Mayor Patrick Hall emphasised the importance of the annual Pioneers Tea in celebrating Canning’s history and acknowledging the contributions of its oldest families. “We owe so much to our Canning pioneer families, who’ve worked so hard in helping build this district into the welcoming and thriving city that we are today,” he said. “Our pioneers are the essence in our community, and it was great to see students from Lynwood Senior High School come along to help cater for the event, as well as interacting with our pioneers and listening to their stories, plus a special performance from the local Wilson Primary School.”

Residents who have lived in the city for more than 50 years can register their interest for next year’s Pioneers Tea by calling 1300 422 664 or emailing the city.
