A United States national has died following a spearfishing incident that went wrong on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Incident Details

Police reported that the man, believed to be in his 40s, was spearfishing with a 20-year-old male acquaintance when both became trapped in a rip current at Shelly Beach in Manly on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the beach around 2:50 PM after the pair were brought out of the water, with the older man found unconscious.

Emergency Response

Paramedics performed CPR on the man before transporting him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his condition. Although formal identification has not yet been completed, authorities have been informed that he was a US national.

The younger man involved in the incident was not injured.

Investigation Underway

Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. A report will be prepared for the coroner to examine the details of the drowning.
