Geraldton Migration Surge Highlights Regional Shift
The Regional Movers Index (RMI) for the March 2026 quarter has revealed a record increase in Australians moving to regional areas, with the city of Greater Geraldton in Western Australia experiencing a 69.1 per cent rise in internal migration over the 12 months from March 2025 to March 2026. This significant jump underscores the enduring appeal of regional lifestyles, even as the pace of growth moderates from earlier peaks.
Nationally, the RMI recorded a 20.1 per cent increase in capital-to-regional movement compared to the previous quarter, and a 4.7 per cent rise year-on-year. City residents moving to the regions outnumbered those moving to cities by 29.7 per cent, indicating a sustained preference for regional living.
Geraldton's Migration Trends
While the 69.1 per cent increase is substantial, it represents a slowdown from two years ago when Geraldton recorded a 395 per cent rise, one of the highest in Australia. Despite this, the Mid West city continues to attract newcomers drawn to its laidback lifestyle and community spirit.
Alex Dugan, a 21-year-old radio host at HIT 96.5, moved from Newcastle, NSW, to Geraldton in November 2025. She described the move as the best decision she ever made. “I’m loving every second of Geraldton. Coming from Newcastle, which is a much larger city to a place like Geraldton, is a massive change of pace, but it’s definitely something I needed,” she said.
Dugan cited a career opportunity she couldn’t pass up as the reason for her move. She praised the welcoming nature of the community: “You’ll never walk past somebody along the foreshore that doesn’t have a smile on their face or won’t give you a wave or say hello. It’s such a nice, welcoming, accepting community here that I don’t think you’d really get anywhere else.”
National Trends and Expert Insights
Regional Australia Institute CEO Liz Ritchie commented on the record results, stating: “This is the highest level of capital‑to‑regional movement the RMI has ever recorded. Australians are continuing to choose regional life in greater numbers, even as economic conditions shift. Across COVID, inflation, housing pressures and tight labour markets, the trend has been remarkably consistent — people are leaving capital cities for regions, and they’re doing so at increasing rates.”
The RMI data confirms that the shift to regional living is not a temporary phenomenon but a long-term trend reshaping Australia's population distribution. Geraldton, with its affordable housing, coastal lifestyle, and growing job opportunities, remains a key destination for those seeking a change from city life.
