A fresh blanket of snow has covered New South Wales ski resorts, offering a significant boost to the winter season and raising hopes for skiers and snowboarders. According to resort operators, the snowfall arrived over the weekend, with some areas receiving up to 30 centimeters of fresh powder.
Snowfall Details and Resort Impact
The snowfall was widespread across the Snowy Mountains, with Thredbo reporting 25 centimeters and Perisher receiving 30 centimeters. Charlotte Pass and Selwyn also recorded significant accumulations. The fresh snow has improved conditions on the slopes, with many runs now open and base depths increasing.
Resort managers expressed optimism about the remainder of the season. "This snowfall is exactly what we needed to rejuvenate the slopes and extend the season," said a spokesperson for Perisher. "The conditions are excellent for both beginners and advanced skiers."
Season Extension and Visitor Numbers
The snow dump comes after a slow start to the season, with earlier warm weather limiting snowmaking. The fresh snowfall is expected to attract more visitors, boosting local economies that rely on winter tourism. Accommodation bookings have already increased, according to local tourism officials.
"We've seen a surge in inquiries and bookings since the snow started falling," said a representative from the Snowy Mountains Tourism. "This will be a welcome boost for businesses that have been struggling."
Safety and Travel Advice
While the snow is welcome, authorities have warned of hazardous driving conditions on alpine roads. Motorists are advised to carry chains and check road closures before traveling. Ski resorts have also reminded visitors to follow safety guidelines and stay within marked trails.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast more snow later in the week, which could further improve conditions. However, skiers are urged to monitor weather updates and plan accordingly.
