Peel Charities Urgently Need Winter Donations as Demand Soars

PeelConnect and Peel Community Kitchen are urgently calling for winter donations as cold temperatures and heavy rain exacerbate the hardships faced by people experiencing homelessness and financial insecurity in the Peel region. The charities report they cannot keep up with the rising demand for warm clothing, blankets, and other essential items.

Critical Need for Men's Clothing and Bedding

PeelConnect is specifically appealing for donations of warm men's clothing, including track pants, jumpers, hoodies, jackets, shoes, and warm tops. The organisation notes that donations of men's clothing are generally fewer and run out faster. Additionally, they are seeking bedding and tents to help people facing the harsh winter conditions.

A PeelConnect spokesperson emphasised the urgency: “The heavy rain spells add to the stress for our rough sleeping friends who are exposed to the elements without respite. We rely very much on the kindness of the community for donated items to pass on, and appreciate the generosity that we see every day. We can’t work miracles in providing housing or even good shelter, but we can see to their everyday needs as best we can.”

Peel Community Kitchen Sees Over 150 People Daily

Peel Community Kitchen is also seeking winter essentials as it continues to support large numbers of people each week. Chairperson Angelo Gangemi said the kitchen often sees more than 150 people on a busy day. “We forget how cold winter does get, so we actually try and help people with socks, blankets, tarps, tents — anything that would help people have a more normal life and help them get through winter,” he said.

Mr Gangemi noted that donations have been slower than hoped this year, with many charities appealing for support while cost-of-living pressures also affect potential donors. “I think the problem is that there are so many charities looking to do the same thing, so the donations get diluted somewhat. People are doing it tough themselves, so maybe they have less to give away,” he said.

Growing Housing Crisis Affects More People

Mr Gangemi highlighted the growing housing crisis, recalling a volunteer who told him she was one more rent increase from being homeless. “I find it extremely challenging and difficult to grasp that in a society like ours, this is a reality that people face every day,” he said.

Shelter WA chief executive Kath Snell warned that winter conditions pose serious health risks for people without stable housing. “Experiencing homelessness is extremely tough, but it is even worse during severe temperatures and extreme weather events. Winter brings life-threatening risks, including hypothermia and respiratory illnesses to people who are sleeping rough on the street, in cars, tents and makeshift shelters,” she said.

Rising Living Costs Drive More People to Seek Help

Ms Snell said rising living costs are pushing more people to seek help, with about 5900 people accessing homelessness services across WA on any given day. “The problem is magnified with the cost of living leading to additional people presenting to homelessness services for support. We commend all the specialist homelessness services, and recognise that the demand is high, and times are tough. It is heartbreaking for staff and volunteers in these services to see so many people struggling,” she said.

Winter donations for Peel Community Kitchen Inc can be made at their premises at 2 Tuart Avenue, Mandurah. Men’s clothing donations to PeelConnect can be dropped off at their premises at 4/3 Dower Street, Mandurah.
