Australind Train Service Set for June Return After Extended Closure
The long-awaited Australind train service connecting Perth and Bunbury is scheduled to resume operations by the end of June, marking a significant milestone nearly three years after its closure. Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed the news on Wednesday, announcing that the service will officially be back on the tracks starting Monday, June 29.
History of Delays and Revised Timelines
The train line was initially shut down in 2023 due to extensive works on the Armadale line, with a planned reopening date set for mid-2025. However, a series of setbacks have repeatedly pushed back the timeline. Ms Saffioti previously cited delays to the Thornlie-Cockburn line as a key factor, leading the State Government to adjust the reopening to the first quarter of 2026. Further testing phases caused additional postponements, extending the closure period.
Phased Reopening and Service Expansion Plans
In her announcement, Ms Saffioti outlined a staged approach to the service's return. Initially, only one train will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Coach services will continue to run on the remaining days until a second train is introduced in early August. The State Government has committed to a broader expansion, with plans to increase the fleet to four trains in total. This expansion aims to double the number of services by early next year, enhancing connectivity and capacity for passengers.
