WIN Grand Redesign Sparks Anger as Cinema and Pool Removed

Revised plans for the $275 million WIN Grand development in Wollongong have drawn criticism after a cinema and public swimming pool were removed from the project. The changes, which also include an increase in apartment towers from 390 to 546 units, have been described by opponents as a 'far cry' from the original 2023 approval.

Wollongong City Council has expressed disappointment over the loss of community-focused features, noting that the original plan included a pub, live music venue, cinema, health facilities and exhibition space. The council's submission stated that the revised proposal reduces the development's contribution to the city's cultural and entertainment hub.

Local resident Patricia O'Brien objected to the changes, arguing that the removal of the pool, cinema and small park prioritises profits over community wellbeing. She said the original concept would have fostered inclusion and amenity for residents and the wider community.

Developer Level 33, which acquired the site from billionaire Bruce Gordon, has cited market conditions for dropping the cinema and pool. The company also noted that the revised design better optimises housing provision near public transport, with 132 of the apartments designated as affordable.

Wollongong city councillor Andrew Anthony criticised the consultation process as inadequate and poorly publicised. Of the 30 public submissions received, only one supported the revised plans, submitted by a real estate agent from Chatswood.

The project is now being assessed under the NSW State Significant Development process. Level 33 has declined to comment but is reviewing submissions as part of the planning process.
