Lindian Resources has embarked on an ambitious new phase of development at its Kangankunde rare earths project in Malawi, initiating a comprehensive stage two resource definition and geotechnical drilling program. This strategic move is designed to significantly enhance the scale, confidence, and longevity of the mining operation, positioning it as a key global supplier of rare earth elements.

Drilling Campaign Targets Resource Upgrade

The company has commenced an aggressive drilling campaign with the primary objective of converting approximately 20 to 40 million tonnes of inferred resource material into the higher-confidence indicated category. This conversion is critical for refining mine planning and unlocking the full potential of the deposit.

Lindian plans to execute an extensive drilling program, comprising 3,400 metres of diamond core drilling and 2,700 metres of reverse circulation drilling. This effort is complemented by a dedicated geotechnical study aimed at ensuring robust pit design and operational stability.

Operational Intensity and Timeline

Currently, two diamond rigs are operating continuously on a 24/7 schedule, supported by a reverse circulation rig during day shifts. This intensive drilling activity is expected to persist through April, with assay results anticipated by the end of May.

If timelines hold, Lindian aims to deliver an updated resource model by late June, providing a clearer picture of the project's expanded capabilities and economic viability.

Geological Significance of Kangankunde

The Kangankunde deposit is a substantial carbonatite-hosted rare earths system located within altered gneiss country rock. Its geological structure features a dominant oval-shaped central carbonatite body, flanked by smaller connected spurs known as the North and South Knolls.

A distinctive concentric zoning pattern characterises the deposit, with a carbonate-rich core surrounded by breccias and altered units. This geological framework contributes to the project's impressive size and consistency, making it a standout in the rare earths sector.

Focus on Expansion and Production Goals

The current drilling program specifically targets areas of the orebody where greater confidence in grade distribution and geological continuity is required. By tightening drill spacing in these zones, Lindian aims to solidify the foundations for a larger stage two mine design.

This expansion could potentially increase throughput to as much as four million tonnes of ore per annum. At this production rate, the stage two development might yield an additional 100,000 tonnes annually of rare earth element-bearing monazite concentrate, substantially boosting output.

Executive Insights on Strategic Objectives

Lindian Resources executive director Zac Komur emphasised the program's focus, stating, "Stage 2 is about scale and mine life, and that starts with confidence in the resource model and the design inputs that sit behind it. This program is focused on the parts of the orebody most likely to define the Stage 2 expansion case, converting targeted Inferred material to Indicated where the drilling supports it, and completing the geotechnical work required for robust pit design."

Komur added, "Lindian is rapidly building a world-class project." This sentiment is reinforced by recent advancements, including the procurement of critical long-lead plant items such as the SAG mill, thickener, flocculation plant, shaking tables, and belt filters.

Infrastructure and Location Advantages

On-site development is progressing swiftly, with owner-operated Komatsu mining fleets actively shaping haul roads, construction platforms, and tailings storage facility earthworks. The 90-person accommodation camp is nearing completion, accompanied by advancing administration buildings, a medical clinic, and security facilities to support workforce mobilisation.

Strategically located 90 kilometres north of Blantyre, Malawi's commercial hub, Kangankunde is renowned for its scale, high-grade mineralisation, and absence of radioactive elements. These attributes distinguish it from other rare earths projects globally.

Future Prospects and Global Significance

The stage two program is fundamentally about translating Kangankunde's inherent advantages—scale, favourable mineralogy, and low-impurity profile—into a longer mine life and higher annual production. With drilling underway and a clear pathway to resource upgrades, Lindian is vigorously working to cement Kangankunde's status as one of the world's most strategically important undeveloped rare earths projects.

As the global demand for rare earth elements continues to rise, driven by advancements in technology and renewable energy, projects like Kangankunde play a pivotal role in securing supply chains. Lindian's proactive approach underscores its commitment to contributing significantly to this critical sector.
