Balabite, a popular eatery in Townsville, has been repeatedly targeted in a wave of theft and vandalism, leaving the owner frustrated and concerned for the business's future.
Repeated Incidents
The restaurant, located on Flinders Street, has experienced multiple break-ins and acts of vandalism over recent weeks. Owner Sarah Johnson said the incidents have caused significant financial and emotional strain.
Details of the Attacks
In the most recent incident, thieves smashed a window to gain entry and stole cash from the till. Previous attacks have included graffiti on the building and damage to outdoor furniture. Johnson estimates the total cost of repairs and losses to be in the thousands of dollars.
“It’s incredibly disheartening,” Johnson said. “We work so hard to provide a great experience for our customers, and then this happens. It feels like a constant battle.”
Community Support
Despite the setbacks, the local community has rallied around Balabite. Regular customers have offered support through social media, and some have even started a fundraising campaign to help cover the costs. Johnson expressed gratitude for the outpouring of kindness.
“We have amazing customers who have been so supportive. It gives us hope,” she said.
Police Investigation
Queensland Police are investigating the incidents and have increased patrols in the area. They urge anyone with information to come forward. Detective Senior Constable Mark Thompson said the crimes are being taken seriously.
“We understand the impact these crimes have on small businesses, and we are working diligently to identify those responsible,” Thompson said.
Call for Action
Johnson is calling for stronger measures to protect local businesses, including better lighting and security cameras in the area. She hopes that by speaking out, other businesses can avoid similar experiences.
“We need to look out for each other,” she said. “This isn’t just about Balabite; it’s about the whole community.”
