City of Stirling to trial on-demand bulky furniture collection service
Stirling to trial on-demand bulky furniture collection

The City of Stirling is preparing to launch a new on-demand bulk furniture collection service designed to help residents dispose of large items like lounges more easily.

As part of a 12-month trial expected to commence on July 1, 2026, residential properties will receive one on-demand lounge suite collection per financial year, replacing their usual skip bin entitlement for that item.

The city recently issued a tender for the new service, with the contract anticipated to be awarded at the next council meeting.

City officers explained that the initiative targets large lounge suites that often do not fit into skip bins.

“Due to accessibility limitations with loading larger furniture items into skip bins, the city is looking to enhance its service provision,” officers stated in the tender description.

“During the trial, it’s expected that residential properties will be entitled to one on-demand lounge suite collection service per financial year, in lieu of their skip bin collection entitlement.”

In 2014, the City of Stirling replaced its traditional junk verge collection system with an on-demand skip bin model. Since then, residential property owners and renters who pay for waste services have been entitled to one free skip bin per year, with the option to pay for an additional collection.

In addition to skip bins, residents also have access to a separate on-demand service for verge collection of white goods, mattresses, and e-waste.

While this system has operated for more than a decade, it has not proved popular among some residents.

Last July, the Stirling council voted to proceed with a two-year trial of bulk waste verge collections in Balga, Mirrabooka, Nollamara, and Westminster, also due to begin in July 2026.

This decision was initiated by Balga ward councillor Michael Dudek, who said there was strong community interest in returning to a verge collection system, particularly from those struggling with limited space or difficulties booking skip bins.

This financial year, the City of Stirling is expected to spend approximately $49 million on its waste services, with the new on-demand lounge suite collection adding an estimated $56,000 to the budget.

The tender report for the service was considered by the city’s community and resources committee at its meeting on Tuesday night and will be formally voted on by the council at its meeting on May 5.
