Applecross Short Stay Apartment Plan: $16.2M Six-Storey Building
Applecross $16.2M Apartment Plan Includes Short Stay Option

A $16.2 million short stay accommodation development could be on the horizon in Applecross. The project involves constructing a six-storey building at 5 Macrae Road, designed for both buyers and short-term tenants. The site has remained vacant since its sale in 2021.

Proposal Details

The Griffin Group, which will fund and develop the project if approved, submitted a building proposal to the City of Melville in March. Founder and CEO Greg Devine highlighted the location's appeal, stating: "It sits within one of Applecross' most sought-after pockets, in a quiet tree-lined street with walkable access to the river and ample amenities." He added that Applecross consistently ranks as one of Perth's most desirable suburbs, making it a natural fit for the group's focus on low-maintenance premium apartments.

Apartment Configuration

The proposal includes 21 accommodation units: 10 two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments and 11 three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartments. A ground-floor car park with 32 bays for occupants and a communal rooftop garden are also planned.

Mr Devine said the development targets downsizers seeking more affordable living: "This development is designed with owner-occupiers in mind, particularly downsizers ... offering apartments that retain the same standard of comfort and lifestyle they're used to but with far less upkeep than a standalone home."

Short Stay Flexibility

He also noted a secondary "short stay" option, as community demand for diverse living options grows. "Many of our buyers, including those who enter as owner-occupiers, often express interest in having the flexibility to adapt their apartments to short stay use," he said. Short stay accommodation typically refers to periods of less than three months, booked via platforms like Booking.com or Airbnb.

Community Consultation

The City of Melville is now collecting public feedback on the proposal, in line with local planning policy requiring all complex developments to be advertised for 28 days of community consultation. City officers will prepare a report based on feedback and relevant planning policies, which will be presented to the Joint Development Assessment Panel for approval. The proposal is open for comment on the city's website until May 29.
