An exclusive Kimberley wilderness experience has been confirmed for May 2026 after overwhelming reader interest, with limited seats still available for adventurous West Australians.
Direct Flight to Wilderness Adventure
The Kimberley Wild Weekend, organised by The West Australian's Stephen Scourfield, will run from Friday, May 8 to Sunday, May 10, 2026. A charter plane with 57 seats will fly participants directly from a private air terminal in Perth to Kununurra in the remote East Kimberley region.
While more readers expressed interest than available seats, not all places have been filled at the time of writing, creating a first come, first served opportunity for those quick to secure their spot.
Immersive Kimberley Experience
The three-day adventure begins with immediate immersion into the Kimberley landscape. Upon arrival in Kununurra, the group will head straight to the spectacular Cockburn Range to settle into the Emma Gorge Resort. The first evening features dinner accompanied by live local music, with accommodation in the resort's distinctive tented cabins.
The following morning includes a guided walk up Emma Gorge, culminating in a refreshing dip in the natural pool beneath a droplet waterfall. After a lunch featuring local flavours of beef and barramundi, the journey continues across the Kimberley to Lake Argyle, with the drive itself promised as an adventure through this remarkable landscape.
Ord River Exploration and Return
At Lake Argyle Resort, participants will enjoy dinner in a dramatically situated venue before spending the night in studio cabins. The final morning of the expedition features a boat adventure along the upper Ord River, travelling from the Ord Dam wall back to Kununurra.
This river journey provides another dimension to the East Kimberley experience before the group returns to Kununurra airport for the charter flight back to Perth.
The entire Kimberley Wild Weekend package is priced at $4499 per person for twin share accommodation, with solo travellers paying $4999. The expedition represents a significant saving in time and distance compared to driving, which would cover approximately 6400 kilometres return from Perth.
Stephen Scourfield will accompany the group throughout, drawing on his 40 years of travel experience in the East Kimberley to enrich the journey with personal insights and stories about this region he describes as close to his heart.
The West Australian has partnered with family-owned company Holidays of Australia, who previously collaborated on successful Uluru trips featuring direct charter flights from Perth.
