New Luxury Suites Transform Australian Rail Holidays with Unprecedented Opulence

The introduction of the Aurora and Australis Suites marks a significant evolution in Australian luxury rail holidays, setting a new benchmark for opulent travel experiences on iconic trains like The Ghan and The Indian Pacific. These suites, unveiled by Journey Beyond, represent a departure from traditional offerings, featuring lavish designs and exclusive amenities that position Australia among the world's premier luxury rail destinations.

Unveiling of the Aurora and Australis Suites

Journey Beyond has revealed the Aurora and Australis Suites, which will be available on their long-distance trains starting from April 2026. The Australis Suite starts at $16,790 per person for a three-day journey on the Indian Pacific, while the Aurora Suite begins at $11,190 per person. According to Justine Lally, executive general manager of marketing at Journey Beyond, these suites elevate Australia's iconic rail journeys by offering unparalleled space, design, and service.

Design and Features of the Suites

The suites boast intricate details such as decorative timber accents, stone masonry, iron filigree, and coved ceilings that reference traditional cornices. Designed by global firm Woods Bagot, they draw inspiration from the Art Deco era and incorporate colors and tones reflecting the Australian landscape. Key features include:

  • Separate Bedrooms: Both suites feature separate bedrooms with custom-sized beds, a rarity in rail carriages.
  • Size Comparison: The Australis Suite is three times larger than Journey Beyond's current Platinum cabins, and the Aurora Suite offers double the space.
  • Luxury Amenities: Personalized butler service, private in-suite dining, and curated in-room bars tailored to guest preferences.

Enhanced Travel Experience

David Donald, executive general manager of rail at Journey Beyond, emphasizes that luxury lies in the details, with every element thoughtfully considered to enhance the passenger experience. The suites are part of all-inclusive packages that include premium dining and free-flowing Champagne Bollinger La Grande Annee throughout the journey. Additionally, exclusive off-train experiences are being expanded, such as:

  • Helicopter flights over Nitmiluk National Park for northbound Ghan travelers, featuring a private champagne treat in the outback.
  • A heritage woolshed dining experience on the four-day northbound Ghan itinerary, focusing on local produce and regional storytelling.

Impact and Demand

With strong demand already observed and future departures filling quickly, the Aurora and Australis Suites are poised to become some of Australia's most sought-after travel experiences. They offer a unique way to explore the country, where the journey itself is as memorable as the destination, reinforcing Australia's position in the global luxury rail market.
