Maldives: More Than Just a Honeymoon Paradise for Aussie Travellers
Maldives: More Than Honeymoons for Aussies

The Maldives has long been regarded as the ultimate honeymoon destination, and while that reputation remains well-deserved, the island nation offers far more than romantic getaways. Comprising over 1,000 islands, it is undeniably one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The photos of pristine turquoise waters are not exaggerated; they capture the reality.

Direct Flights from Melbourne

Getting to the Maldives from Australia has never been easier, thanks to a new direct flight route from Melbourne to Malé International Airport. This service, a partnership between Luxury Escapes and Maldivian Airlines, eliminates the need for layovers. The Airbus A330-200 flight takes approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes, a significant improvement over the previous 20-hour journey with two flights and a stopover.

Both outbound and return flights are overnight. Departing Melbourne at 11:20 PM AEST on Monday, you arrive in Malé around 6 AM local time, allowing a full day to enjoy the resort even if your room isn't ready. The return flight departs Sunday night, arriving back in Melbourne around lunchtime Monday, giving you a final full day in paradise. Note that Maldivian Airlines is a dry airline with no alcohol on board, but sleep is the priority.

Affordable Luxury Accommodation

The iconic over-water villas are more affordable than many assume. With over 100 island resorts, most five-star and featuring these villas, package deals with flights can be competitive compared to other Asian holiday destinations. Opting for all-inclusive packages that cover meals is highly recommended, as you'll likely dine at the resort for every meal.

Two standout resorts are Centara Grand Lagoon and Anantara Veli. Centara Grand Lagoon, ultra-modern and recently opened, is family-friendly with separate islands: Grand Lagoon for couples and older guests, and Mirage Lagoon with a main pool, slides, water playground, lazy river, and kids' club. The over-water villas are state-of-the-art and spacious. Anantara Veli is adults-only, featuring traditional over-water villas and beachfront options, surrounded by lush greenery. Nearby, Anantara Dhigu caters to families, and Naladhu offers 20 private houses for ultimate seclusion. A small picnic island with a tiki bar and swing in the water adds to the experience.

Endless Activities

Water Sports and Marine Life

With 99% water coverage, water activities are a highlight. Snorkeling is a must; you can freely explore around the resort, spotting marine life like turtles. Scuba diving is available, and even non-certified divers can enjoy crystal-clear waters. Many resorts offer snorkeling with nurse sharks and stingrays—an unforgettable experience. Stand-up paddleboarding, glass-floor kayaking, and surfing lessons for all levels are also available. For adrenaline seekers, there's parasailing, jet skiing, windsurfing, kite surfing, sea bobbing, and flyboarding.

Land-Based Activities

If water isn't your thing, land activities abound. Spa treatments and massages are highly recommended for relaxation. Cooking classes teach local specialties like crab cakes and tuna curry, packed with spices. Seafood lovers will delight in fresh reef fish and jumbo king prawns, while Thai food, sushi, and sashimi are also excellent. Every meal during the trip was outstanding, though menu anxiety was a real challenge due to the abundance of choices.

With direct flights, luxurious yet affordable accommodation, endless activities, and stunning clear waters, the Maldives deserves a top spot on your travel list. The writer travelled as a guest of Luxury Escapes.
