A 27-year-old man from Byford is facing serious charges after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase that reached staggering speeds of 200 kilometres per hour before ending in a dramatic fiery crash in Perth's southern suburbs.
The High-Speed Pursuit Unfolds
The incident began around 10:15 PM on Tuesday when police attempted to stop a white Ford Falcon sedan on South Western Highway in Oakford. Rather than pulling over, the driver allegedly accelerated away from officers, sparking a pursuit that would reach terrifying speeds.
The chase continued through several suburbs, with the Ford Falcon reaching approximately 200km/h as it travelled along Armadale Road. Police Air Wing, known as PolAir, was quickly deployed to track the vehicle from above as the dangerous situation unfolded across multiple locations.
The pursuit continued for several kilometres with the driver showing complete disregard for road safety and other motorists during the late-night incident.
Dramatic Conclusion in Wungong
The high-speed chase came to a dramatic conclusion when the Ford Falcon allegedly collided with another vehicle on Albany Highway in Wungong. The impact caused the suspect's car to burst into flames, creating a dangerous and chaotic scene.
Emergency services rushed to the location near the intersection of Albany Highway and Soldiers Road where the crashed vehicle was fully engulfed in fire. The 27-year-old driver managed to escape the burning wreckage before being apprehended by waiting police officers.
Miraculously, despite the extreme speeds and fiery crash, no serious injuries were reported from the incident. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision was assessed by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
Charges and Police Response
The Byford man now faces multiple serious charges including failing to stop, reckless driving, and no authority to drive. He is scheduled to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court at a later date to answer to these allegations.
WA Police emphasized the danger posed by such behaviour on public roads. A police spokesperson stated that the incident demonstrated the importance of the PolAir unit in tracking dangerous drivers while minimizing risk to other road users and police personnel.
The successful deployment of Air Wing allowed ground units to maintain a safer distance while still monitoring the vehicle's movements until the situation could be safely resolved.
This incident serves as another reminder of the risks police face daily and the consequences of reckless driving behaviour on Western Australian roads.
