A 27-year-old man is in custody following a dramatic incident in Canberra where he allegedly used his car as a weapon against police officers attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.
Dramatic arrest attempt in Fyshwick
The incident began around 2pm on Friday, November 7, when ACT Policing officers located the wanted man in the suburb of Fyshwick. According to police statements, the man was subject to an outstanding arrest warrant from NSW and was also under court-ordered good behaviour obligations in the ACT.
Officers moved to arrest the man as he exited a store, but the situation quickly escalated when he jumped into a vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. During his escape, the man allegedly struck one officer in the leg with his vehicle and drove directly at another officer before speeding away.
Dangerous police pursuit through Canberra
Police in nearby vehicles immediately activated their emergency lights and sirens and gave chase, but the man refused to pull over. The pursuit turned increasingly dangerous as the suspect began driving on the wrong side of the road, nearly colliding with other vehicles in the process.
The man's reckless driving forced police to terminate the pursuit for public safety reasons, launching an extensive search operation to locate the fugitive.
Roof-top surrender in Ainslie
The search concluded on Saturday afternoon when police attended a residence in the suburb of Ainslie. Officers discovered the man on the roof of the home, where he surrendered to authorities after a short standoff.
The 27-year-old was subsequently placed under arrest and taken into custody without further incident.
Police have charged the man with multiple offences including aggravated dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving while disqualified. He is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday where the serious nature of the allegations will be formally addressed.
This incident highlights the dangers police officers regularly face while performing their duties and serves as a reminder that those with outstanding warrants will be pursued through all legal means available to authorities.
