WA Government Announces Major $140 Million Investment for New Primary Schools

The Western Australian State Government has unveiled a significant $140 million commitment to construct four new primary schools across Perth's expanding outer suburbs. The projects are slated for completion in 2028, marking a substantial boost to the state's public education infrastructure.

Details of the New School Developments

Education Minister Sabine Winton confirmed the funding allocation on Thursday, highlighting the specific locations set to benefit from this initiative. The investment will support the establishment of Eglington North Primary School and Yanchep East Primary School, both situated in the Butler area. Additionally, the government announced plans for Treeby East Primary School in Jandakot and Vasse West Primary School in Vasse.

This announcement forms part of a broader $230 million enhancement package for Western Australia's education system. Beyond the new primary schools, the funding includes:

  • $30 million dedicated to Como Secondary College for constructing a new sports hall and transforming the existing sports hall into a modern performing arts centre.
  • $27 million allocated to Karrinyup Primary School for a new classroom block, relocation of hardcourts, and refurbishment of kindergarten, pre-primary, and administrative facilities.

Government Commitment to Quality Public Education

Premier Roger Cook emphasised the government's dedication to providing accessible, high-quality public schooling for families relocating to Western Australia. "That is why we are delivering major investments in new schools, and significant upgrades at existing schools," he stated. "My government is backing public education with record investment - because strong schools strengthen communities, and support Western Australian students, families, and educators."

Minister Winton further elaborated on the strategic importance of the funding, noting it would ensure schools are equipped with contemporary technology and resources. "It is so important that students and teachers have access to modern, quality learning and working environments," she remarked. "This investment will help ensure new schools and state-of-the-art upgrades are delivered where they are needed most."

She added, "Our major investments in schools like Como Secondary College and Karrinyup Primary School are examples of how our government is investing to upgrade older facilities and make them fit-for-purpose. Our public schools continue to be the heart of their communities, and the Cook Labor Government will continue to deliver quality education infrastructure close to where families live."

The initiative underscores the state's proactive approach to addressing population growth in outer suburban areas, ensuring educational facilities keep pace with community needs. By focusing on both new constructions and upgrades, the government aims to foster enhanced learning environments that benefit students, educators, and local residents alike.
