A new foundation has been established in honour of Corporal Cameron Baird VC, MG, one of Australia's most decorated soldiers, to provide ongoing support for Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, veterans, and their families. The Cameron Baird Foundation aims to perpetuate the values of courage, mateship, and service that defined Baird's life and military career.
Foundation's Mission and Programs
Announced on the 10th anniversary of his death, the foundation will focus on mental health support, financial assistance, and educational scholarships for ADF members and their families. According to the foundation's chair, retired Major General John Cantwell, "Cameron's legacy is not just about his Victoria Cross; it's about his unwavering commitment to his mates and his country. This foundation will ensure that spirit lives on."
The foundation has already secured initial funding of $2 million from private donors and corporate sponsors, with plans to raise an additional $5 million over the next three years. Programs will include emergency relief grants, counselling services, and leadership development courses.
Cameron Baird's Heroic Actions
Corporal Baird was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, the nation's highest military honour, for his actions during a battle in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province in 2013. During a fierce firefight, he exposed himself to enemy fire multiple times to protect his comrades and ultimately made the ultimate sacrifice. He also received the Medal for Gallantry for earlier actions in 2007.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the foundation, stating, "Corporal Baird's heroism and selflessness embody the best of the Australian spirit. This foundation will help ensure that his legacy continues to inspire and support those who serve."
Support for Veterans and Families
The foundation will partner with existing veteran support organisations, including Soldier On and the RSL, to avoid duplication of services. A key initiative is the "Baird Scholarship," which will provide up to 10 annual scholarships for children of fallen or wounded ADF members to pursue tertiary education.
Defence Minister Richard Marles noted, "The creation of this foundation is a fitting tribute to Corporal Baird's memory. It will make a tangible difference to the lives of many who have given so much for our country."
The foundation's launch coincides with a growing recognition of the need for better support for veterans, with recent government reports highlighting gaps in mental health and transition services.
