Man Avoids Jail for Christmas Day One-Punch Attack

A 20-year-old man convicted of a shocking one-punch attack in the early hours of Christmas Day has avoided jail time.

Incident Outside Kalamunda Hotel

The hit caused the man to fall backwards and hit his head on the bitumen. While the 40-year-old victim was unconscious for 4.5 minutes, Dewar filmed him on Snapchat saying: “My younger sister, hey? Don’t hit on my younger sister next time, brother. Keep snoring.”

The victim also suffered a cut to his lip and memory loss.

Court Proceedings

Dewar’s lawyer tried to argue a fine was a sufficient punishment, but the police prosecutor said that was wholly inappropriate given he attacked someone unprovoked and has shown a lack of remorse.

During sentencing, the magistrate told Dewar the Snapchat video showed a callous disregard for the welfare of his victim and coward punches are occurring all too frequently in the community.

Dewar was sentenced to six months in prison but he will not spend anymore time behind bars because it was suspended for nine months.
