A wild brawl involving approximately 15 people has erupted outside popular Melbourne bars and restaurants, marking the latest explosion of violence gripping the city’s nightlife. The midnight altercation along the busy Southbank dining strip left at least one man down and sent witnesses scrambling for safety.
Police confirmed that no victims had come forward, but one man has been fined for riotous behaviour. The incident adds to growing concerns about nightlife safety in Melbourne, as the city remains under siege and braces for further attacks following a wave of arson and shootings targeting hospitality venues.
Business Owners Call for Military Intervention
The escalating violence has prompted extraordinary calls from business owners to bring in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Strip club owner Michael Trimble, who runs Bar20, claimed military intervention was the only option left. He proposed stationing armoured Bushmaster vehicles in arson hotspots, stating, “We keep hearing foreign crime gangs might be behind this, so let’s defend the place.”
However, former federal police detective Rohan Pike argued that a military presence was neither needed nor appropriate. “They’re not investigators, they’re not designed for law enforcement. The police have got a good record for getting these things under control,” Pike said.
Government and Police Response
Prevention of Family Violence Minister Melissa Horne dismissed the idea of ADF involvement, stating that responsibility “fairly and squarely sits with VicPol to be able to protect bar owners.” Meanwhile, Operation Eclipse, the specialist police taskforce investigating the attacks, appears to be making progress. Since early April, authorities have made 39 arrests linked to 34 separate incidents, with specialist police laying more than 140 charges.
The brawl and ongoing violence have left Melbourne’s nightlife community on edge, with many hoping that police efforts will restore safety without the need for military intervention.
